The story opens in 1897 with Buck, a powerful 140-pound St. As early as 1923, the story was adapted to film, and it has since seen several more cinematic adaptations. The book's great popularity and success made a reputation for London. ![]() The story was serialized in The Saturday Evening Post in the summer of 1903 and was published later that year in book form. London spent almost a year in the Yukon, and his observations form much of the material for the book. By the end, he sheds the veneer of civilization, and relies on primordial instinct and learned experience to emerge as a leader in the wild. He becomes progressively more primitive and wild in the harsh environment, where he is forced to fight to survive and dominate other dogs. The story opens at a ranch in Santa Clara Valley, California, when Buck is stolen from his home and sold into service as a sled dog in Alaska. The central character of the novel is a dog named Buck. I have already listed several of these quotes in an earlier post about how Calvinists understand the phrase “ dead in sin,” so let me provide just a few additional quotations here which are fairly typical of how Ephesians 2:1-3 is understood. ![]() ![]() How Calvinists Understand “Dead in Sin” (Ephesians 2:1)ĭue to the popularity of this passage among Calvinists, it would be possible to produce scores of quotes from various authors and writers who quote this text as proof for their doctrine of Total Depravity and total inability. The passage that is used most frequently to defend the idea of Total Depravity is Ephesians 2:1-3 where Paul writes about people being dead in sin.Īnd you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of the flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others (Ephesians 2:1-3). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() yeah, TV is back, baby.įoundation season 2 premieres July 14 on Apple TV Plus. Look at all this good shit! Spaceships flying, spaceships crashing into planets (the only thing cooler than spaceships flying), a revolution against an empire, Lee Pace looking distressed, Jared Harris looking determined. Isaac Asimov s Foundation series originally started with what is known as the Foundation trilogy. Gotta be honest here: This trailer rocks. ![]() It just takes its time.Īs a result, there was absolutely zero indication that it would eventually lead to the stuff in the new season 2 trailer, like Lee Pace fighting a dinosaur monster with his bare hands. It’s all pretty neat stuff involving cloned emperors and a scientist who may have discovered an equation for predicting the future. That’s largely thanks to the massive scope of the source material, which spans generations to tell a story of empire and rebellion, jumping back and forth between timelines to establish origins and stakes. Foundation, the Apple TV Plus series based on Isaac Asimov’s seminal science-fiction franchise, got off to a bit of a slow start. ![]() ![]() ![]() The soccer scenes are vivid and will make readers wish for more, but the depiction of Nick as he unlocks his inner reader is smooth and believable. What the mostly free-verse novel does have is a likable protagonist, great wordplay, solid teen and adult secondary characters, and a clear picture of the challenges young people face when self-identity clashes with parental expectations. Alexander’s highly anticipated follow-up to Newbery-winning The Crossover is a reflective narrative, with little of the first book’s explosive energy. His soccer dream derailed, Nick turns to the books he has avoided and finds more than he expected. Nick senses something is going on with his parents, but their announcement that they are separating is an unexpected blow: “it’s like a bombshell / drops / right in the center / of your heart / and it splatters / all across your life.” The stress leads to counseling, and his life is further complicated by injury and emergency surgery. Fortunately, his best friend, Coby, shares his passion for soccer-and, sadly, the unwanted attention of twin bullies in their school. ![]() His linguistics-professor father carefully watches his educational progress, requiring extra reading and word study, much to Nick’s chagrin and protest. Instead he daydreams about soccer, a girl he likes, and an upcoming soccer tournament.
